When positioning the rain barrels be sure to have the primary barrel (the one at the downspout) level if not higher than the secondary barrels. This ensures that water will flow out through the connector hose and into the second barrel. The higher the first barrel than the second, the more water pressure into the second barrel and reduced waste in overflow. For cases where you have 3 or more, you would need to continue this cascade pattern so the water literally flows down to the next barrels. The primary barrel is usually on a stand or cinder blocks to achieve the extra height needed.
